Biological Dentistry

What is biological dentistry?

Biological dentistry isn’t a new specialty in dentistry, it’s actually a philosophy that can apply to all facets of a dental practice and to health care in general. Biological dentists always seek the safest, least toxic way to accomplish the mission of treatment and all the goals of modern dentistry. You’ve heard us talk about Biomimetic dentistry before… well, say “hello” to our new friend Biological dentistry.

You’ve never talked about this before, why now?

Why not now? I believe if you’re not growing you’re dying. After weeks, days, hours (ask my wife) of doing my own research, reading, attending conferences and various trainings I realized something. There is more to this thing called dentistry. It’s not just about the teeth. Yeah sure, it’s our focus, but it is evident, your mouth is the gateway into your entire body. Fixing issues in the mouth no doubt can have an effect on your overall well-being… and in some instances, things in the mouth can be keeping you sick!

How is a biological dentist different than my dentist?

Good question. There is quite a lot that sets me apart from other dentists. I’ll be the first to say, I came out of school a “run of the mill” dentist. Honestly, we all do.  In dental school we are taught the basics, the fundamentals, of traditional dentistry. But again, “if you’re not growing, you’re dying”. Just like any profession, I have idols and mentors, and when I started to explore dentistry in other parts of the world (Switzerland, Germany, etc.) I realized there is a much higher bar being set for dentistry in other parts of the world.

So, what is different about me?

I have been trained to use research-driven protocols to remove your mercury amalgam fillings SAFELY.  This is of paramount importance not only for you as a patient, but also for myself, my staff, and every other patient that comes through our doors.I am totally Mercury free and mercury safe. Period. There is absolutely no reason to put Mercury in that mouth of yours or anyone else’s. None.I use bonding procedures that outlast any “bulk” composite filling material, which has become a staple in dentistry to allow doctors to place fillings much faster. Why? Well… faster means more patients, which means more money… and we all know by now money is the root of all evil. But the catch is, faster does not equal better (in this case it actually means worse). Biomimetic protocols require more time and effort, layering composite in a specific manner to maximize the outcome.I am minimally invasive. In a nutshell, the healthy parts of your tooth stay where they should.

Where can I learn more about Biological Dentistry?

I’m really glad you asked. The IAOMT website is a great resource, as is the IABDM.

IAOMT: International Academy of Oral and Medical Toxicology

IABDM: International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine

If you’re more of a listener, I get that, we don’t all have time to sit down and read, so take a listen to the podcasts below on your next commute. One of my mentors, and dear friend, Dr. Stuart Nunnally will tell you all about the Biological approach.

BetterHealthyGuy Blogcasts Episode #51: Biological Dentistry with Dr. Stuart Nunnally, DDS

The Myers Way™ Podcast Episode 12: Biological Dentistry with Stuart Nunnally, DDS

Look, don’t just read this and think “oh yeah, I am on board”… do some research, read up, ask questions. Take charge and be an advocate for your own health, and I promise you, I will too.
